England creek trail running loop - Mt Glorious
-
Local Knowledge
Mt. Glorious by name, glorious by nature. The trip up the mountain is well worth the tranquility of the trails and the views along the way.
This loop offers an uniquely long downhill for the Brisbane trail scene – almost 10kms, with 900m of loss – along with spectacular vistas of Wivenhoe and the Great Dividing Range. Underfoot is almost exclusively wide fire trail, and there aren't too many turnings to go wrong.
Park at Maiala to make the most of the picnic areas and toilets before and after you run. Running clockwise, jog a brief section of tarmac down the road to the entrance to Joyners Ridge Rd and Westside Track, keeping to the wider left track to stay on Joyners Joyners Ridge Rd. Enjoy running beneath the prehistoric rainforest canopy before beginning the long downhill to Little England Creek.
The only turn to note is the right hander onto England Creek Rd trail at approximately 7.5kms. Keep on heading down until the trail bottoms out at the creek, and run on past the bush camp on your right. Enjoy this brief moment of flat before switching back and starting the climb back up the mountain, staying on England Creek Rd. trail until you hit a T-junction at 16.7km. Turn right here and head on up Lawton Rd trail, which you'll stay on until 21.4kms (nearly back the Mount Glorious Rd. You might hear motorbikes along the road before you get here).
The run ends with a blast of singletrack along the Westside Track, where we recommend taking the narrow stairs on your left at 23.3kms up onto Western Window for a picturesque view of the Wivenhoe valley before you abruptly pop out into a green space opposite Maiala Day Use Area.Pro Tips
- There is nowhere to get water on this loop. Pack nutrition according to what you think you'll need – and a little extra.
- Save this route on your watch / phone ahead of time as mobile phone signal can be sparse in places.
- It's much cooler up here than the trails in the lower D'Aguilar National Park. Especially on early mornings or in the winter, so consider bringing an extra layer or gloves.
Enjoy the run.
